UNIT 4: CELEBRATIONS
Unit 4 Popplet
Artist: Nick Cave
For this studio, we had to make a puppet to help celebrate our identity. I chose to make the head of my puppet faceless and just draw creative marks to show the creative part of my identity. I made the body black to show off the bright beads, feathers, and sequins that represent my personality and creativity. I also, braided some bright-colored thread into an infinity scarf to represent the new business venture that I have started and to show my new-found independence. To make sound, I strung beads together and when the finger puppet moves, there is a soft rustling sound from the beads hitting one another. This puppet celebrates my identity because it incorporates all of the things that I think are important because they make up who I am!
I would definitely incorporate finger puppets into my classroom. I would really like to do this as a literacy project by having the students write a creative story and then making a finger puppet to represent the character they used in their creative story.

Artist: Norman Rockwell
For this studio, we had to create a magazine cover that celebrated something from the past and present. I decided to celebrate my love for my dog. Since this studio was based on Norman Rockwell, I decided to juxtapose one of his paintings of a dog and a boy sleeping with one of my pictures of my dad sleeping with my old dog, Tucker. I decided to name the magazine Man's Best Friend because that's often how dogs are described. I also added boxes that had the "stories" of the month that would be in the issue. I decided to add the caption "From then...to now" because dogs have always been man's best friend. This magazine celebrates dogs and how important they have been to us throughout history.
I would use this idea in my classroom. I would have my students make magazine covers that represent them so that we could hang them up around the room and everyone could see what's important to everyone else. I think that this project could be used a good community builder at the beginning of the year.

Artist: Miriam Schapiro
This was our free studio! I decided to base my studio off of the artist Miriam Schapiro. She did a lot of collages using fabric, so I decided to do a fabric collage that was representative of an infinity scarf. On top of it, I layered wax paper and I decided to write using descriptive language and write what I thought about myself. I intertwined all of these parts by showing that I am ever changing and my writing is how I celebrated myself.
I loved this project and would want to make collages with my students to express themselves and their creativity. I would have them make collages about anything that they wanted as long as it expressed something about them. I also liked the idea of having a free studio day and allowing them to create any piece of art they wanted as long as it celebrated them.
