UNIT 1: IDENTITY
Unit 1 Popplet
Artist: Henri Matisse
For this studio, I had to look at my own identity and what makes up me. I chose to do a collage on my background in music because music has been a huge part of my life since I was 5 years old. Playing the piano keeps me relaxed and is a huge comfort in my life. I have been playing for 16 years, so it is a huge part of my identity. Music was and will always be a huge part of my life.
This studio concept of collages can be closely intertwined with the theme of identity. Through this collage, I was able to show a part of my identity by showing something that is important to myself and something that is truly a large part of my identity.
I believe that this studio can easily be incorporated into my future classroom. I think this would be a great project to do at the beginning of the year to create a classroom community because it makes students think on a deeper level about themselves. I also think this studio was a good way to get to know one another at a deeper level and I think it would be the same in an elementary classroom. Students are able to really see what makes them unique and individuals.

Artist: Chuck Close
Part of your identity is your good and your bad side. There are different traits that apply to both of the different sides to your identity. For this studio, we had to pick a protagonist and an antagonist Disney character to represent our different sides. I chose Scar as my antagonist and Cinderella as my protagonist because they both have similar traits to mine and I related to both of these characters. I made some of the bubbles bigger and smaller for both characters to show the traits that are more visible in myself.
I thought this was a great project do use in an elementary classroom!! Being able to choose from Disney characters was a lot of fun and I was surprised at how much I related to each of these characters. I think it's interesting to think about your dark and light side through Disney characters because it gave a different point of view to myself. I loved this project and I would use this in my classroom so my students can look inside themselves at both of their sides, while still having fun! Students will be able to self-reflect on themselves while still having fun with Disney characters.

Artist: William Wegman
For this studio, I used personification to capture the story of Rapunzel. William Wegman is known for using his Weimaraners in his art, so I wanted to use that idea of the dog in my work as well. I chose the golden retriever because I wanted to relate the Golden Retriever to Rapunzel and her "golden hair". I also used the golden retriever because Rapunzel was "retrieved" from the tower by Prince Charming. I chose to dress the dog up in a dress to personify the dog even more and make it more human-like. I chose the quote, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Let down your golden hair" because it's very well known and people will know what fairytale is being told in the piece. The identity of the fairytale of Rapunzel is being altered physically by making Rapunzel a dog, but the point of the story is still the same.
This studio could easily be used in my classroom. This is a perfect project to introduce students to personification and its' link to literature. You could use this project within a literacy lesson to help students understand the idea of personification. Also, with this project, I could introduce classic literature to my students.
