UNIT 2: RELATIONSHIPS

For this studio, I decided to make a print that showed interconnecting circles. I decided on this because I wanted to show that everyone is interconnect to each other in some way and therefore, we all have connections with each other, whether that means that we actually know someone or we have just seen them on the street. I wanted to start off with more distinct circles to show the birth of our relationships with everyone. They are fresh, new, and everlasting. I made the circles more faded every time I put the stamp down to show that over time those relationships may fade, but they are still there. On the bottom left corner, I wrote the number 7,000,000,000 to represent the number of people in the world. I really wanted to show the relationship between people and the interconnection that everyone has with each other.
I would incorporate this into my classroom by possibly integrating it with literacy. I could have my students choose their favorite book character and draw and write about the character and the relationship that the student would have with that character if the character were real. These drawings would show the figurative relationship, not a literal relationship. I wouldn't do the actual printmaking however because I think it would be really messy and I think I could get the same result with doing a writing and drawing.

For this studio, I decided to do a pop-up of my parents house that I have lived in since I was 3. I have a unique relationship with it because I have grown up there and have had lots of memories while living there. I chose a real life picture of trees that were black and white to show my backyard and to make my house really pop out of the woods. I have had many wonderful memories of building forts in those woods with my neighbors and going on many hikes during the spring and summer. I tried to make my house as realistic as possible without making a complete replica of it to show the importance of my relationship with the house and the memories that are inside of it.
I would use this in my classroom with my students to allow them to reflect on the fact that wherever their home is, there is a relationship there and memories can be made anywhere, no matter what their situation is. I could also incorporate this pop-up project into literacy by having the students make a pop-up setting from a book they are reading or a story that they are writing and it can act like a back drop for a future project that has to do with literacy.
